Greetings everybody, this is Rams here at Ask Our Network. Thank you for being here. We're going to give it another minute or so for people to scroll in. Today we have Safari Dow, our guest, our wonderful guest, who will speak about.Safari and things related
the blockchain and the ecosystem and what's happening in our friendly neighbor country over there and continent. So stay tuned and I'm going to invite some people to talk upon stage soon.
Hey there's a party now can you hear me testing testing? Are you sure you can hear me? Yes, perfectly. How are you today? Good, good, all you guys done. Perfect. I think we
to jump right in the spaces being recorded for all our listeners. Feel free to check back into the talk if you need to go and invite your friends to listen in on this wonderful event that we're going to talk about today. So far, it out.
Thanks again for being here and informing the community, not just on Polkadot, but everybody else we have from far and near. So can you give us an introduction who you are, who the team is, what is Safari Dab?
Thank you very much. So behind the mic is Auguste or Alfred for those who so good to say that I am a member of Safari da we are a web 3 community in East Africa and I'm just representing a larger group of tens of people from all over Africa who are well, we're just being
leave us in decentralization, I'd say. And what we do is we create education of end. I'd say novel web three experiences that help us bring more people to the space and also help us educate people on what's going on in Africa. So we were really excited to kind of dive into
the whole polka dot and modular blockchain space because we think that has potential in African its use cases. And yeah, that's so far either we're just here to kind of help Africa. And I think the web space here grew as much as possible in so many ways. And I see a few of our members here. I mean,
inviting the main leaders of the Dots of Ari itself to come join and speak as well because Safari now is a community, it's not just me. So yeah, if the members can just join in, speak a little, introduce themselves as the leaders of this community. That'll be great. But thank you. I think that's, that's good. Yeah.
Great, great introduction. Thank you so much. It's wonderful. I myself admit that I am naive to the things that are happening in the entire continent. So I'm learning as I go. And I see a few other listeners here too that have greatly aided in my knowledge and learning more about what's happening too.
I do want to start off this space as well as people are, oops, here we go, being requested. I do want to start off this space, sort of giving some background info to what's happening in certain countries in Africa in terms of the blockchain and crypto usage.
for that in some countries it's used by far has been the pain used for quite a while probably way ahead of other countries, especially the United States in terms of payments and applications that are used. So if any of the speakers from Safari down, even that Safari can
form, you know, give us a little background on what blockchain, how blockchain has been being used in the last few or so years. Awesome. I see, I see paranoia.
I'm made to meet your foresince I've already done so I don't know if she wants to say hello but I'll give her a bit of time as I as I jump in on that question which really excites me. I don't have that much I'd say well I'm not that experienced myself I've been here for two years in the space but what I've seen is
DeFi really took shape last year for Africa and in 2003 in the sense that I was watching from close range a initiative called the African DeFi Alliance and just seeing what they did and trying to coordinate credit for people in Africa.
And the results were quite impressive. I can't quite remember the numbers, but the default rates were very low. So you can tell that one, people are using it to access credit, but two, it's also working in ways that people would expect in the sense that I think the default rates were lower than expected.
I can see the file clearly playing a role in helping people access credit especially now from the interest rates at this green bank as everywhere. So that was one of the highlights I saw especially in 2022 just seeing how we can definitely shape access to finance better to work with.
I was speaking, I see other safari and safari down members, so please go free to introduce yourselves and jump in on what you saw in a different aspect of Africa and the three. And they're a crypto for those who don't like that term anymore. It is a term that I
I see the less years that I've heard, maybe for the better. I'm at the point of access to credit that is huge to I myself and part of the Latin America community when it comes to blockchain and certain
countries down there in South America and Central America too are seeing a lot of opportunity for access, for usage of a different form of money. And this opens eyes, for sure, especially within my personal experience and family.
of the opportunity that lies ahead. So it's exciting for sure and I think we can learn a lot from each other and how different countries use it around the whole world. So this is one of those spaces I hope that we all leave with more information and we began and more knowledge of what's happening and how it's used. So yeah, feel free, anybody from the community
Hello, how are you? Hi, I hope you can hear me loud. Yeah, yeah, this is a G boss from Safari now glad to be here. Thank you so much all of you who have spent some time off your busy weekday schedules to make it here.
I would say it's the support and the love that you people show us that keeps us growing. But just more on to what really the experience has been with regards to Web 3 for us. I would look at it not from the perspective of what has been but just the potential that we have seen.
seen when we have started to have a run of such community related events because for the longest time, actually, the event that we had, the last event that we had last year, that was It's a Firey, was the first major Web 3 event in the country that
brought together everybody. Previously you know you'd have people like Binance doing their own meetup, you find a blockchain have their own kind of event but no one had had the chance or the opportunity to bring together everyone under one roof. So for that it was a special event and the kind of network
the kind of ideas, the kind of connections. I mean people had people had people some people got in got investments for the first time to get started on their fledgling projects and it was such a great event and it was the best part about it was that it was it was done in
and unconventional African way, you know. And that's the spark that was lit from that moment has just kept all of us going in our own decentralized way. We have some of us in Europe, some of us in America, but the pool of Mother Africa still
Exorts us to push and work and make sure that we have done our best to bring WebTree to the masses. So that's what I would say is the highlight of us being together and pulling together towards achieving milestones like we have and like we intend to do in the future. Thanks.
Well said, thank you for sharing as well. And if we could go back to an event that I'm parent Neuai, you informed me shortly ago about East Safari. It's an event that I believe was held in which
great success. If anyone could talk about this event a little bit more in detail and then what it meant and what were some of the things that were learned from. That'd be great.
Hey everyone, see a new one here. G2MF bus or also Norman, Gabu, pretty much summed up how it's so far to place, how it started and how it's going.
So we are actually also preparing, going to be preparing for the next Asefari around the same time in September. But before that, we will have Dotsafari, of course, Polkadot-centric event. But if anyone else
has more to add to what Norman had shared about Isafari feel free to come up. Yeah, yeah, I think I can add well, Isafari was special in the sense that it was the first one as Norman said, but it was also quite
quite ambitious. We had a week, a week's worth of in-person activities scheduled for all attendees and then before that we had a month of hacking going on. So it was really this project that brought together so many ecosystems within Ethereum to build on top of Africa and those
who are ready to learn about Web 3. And I think what I walked away with is Africa is ready to adopt, but the people who want to learn also need to be able to access these opportunities more. So we learn that we need to create opportunities for sponsorships primarily if we want to actually elevate and at
stopped in Africa because the people were trying to bring and the people who want to scale and learn and the people who are dedicated might not necessarily have the means here. We learned that when you work with the community it's not easy to scale but it's much easier to build something that
people feel like they've left an impact. So I think we're trying to do things differently for Dotsafari. We're trying to make sure from the get-go we're focusing on bringing more people from within the African ecosystems and giving them an opportunity to interact. And at the same time, we're bringing in the community.
from poker dot for example to give us input on what should happen so that we can kind of just build this together and share the vision as we go because that's what made it so far as success. So we're gonna carry that forward and yeah anyone else feel free jump avoid and add any more comments but it was a hacker phone that started a
Want to prior, thanks to our partners at the Good Club, who are an awesome team who educate Web 3 devs. You check out their courses, the oldest app hack I'm going on. And then we had our boot completures in person, held by our awesome partners at Adanian Labs, which is an awesome incubator and startup house.
Kenya. And I think one of the members here is actually helping us organize the Putkathon for Dotsavari. So I'm sure it's going to be quite intense and great content. And then finally, we had the conference in Keefi, which was a great way to bear food networking was a theme by the beach.
And three days of just learning, interacting with projects in the continent and abroad. Seeing people actually get to know each other, have the breeze hit you as you listen about Tao's. It was quite something. So yeah, I think that's a good summary. It is exciting. If I may, go ahead.
Probably I think the only thing that Auguste has forgotten to mention is the fact that we had people from about 40 different nationalities worldwide. We had someone from Myanmar, we had someone from Australia, we had people from
places far from long and not just on the continent and I think that was one of the biggest highlights too. We had thought when we were doing our booking about two hours to when people were supposed to
to board the train. We got overwhelmed with people who were doing last minute booking and the number was almost higher than if not equal to the people who had already been booked up on the train so it just showed how much interest there was and
the kind of form that picked up towards the end, but it just also shows how people are looking for it to just having a sort of safe space if I would say of this nature. So we're really looking forward to doing it again.
And as I learned, it is happening again. So I think this is a good segue into safari.safari event that's happening. Maybe you could give
us a nice introduction on what the plan is so far. And I'll invite here my colleague BLD who is attending. So yeah.
Yes, I will let the ring leader and the amazing Sianu I take it from you and shout out it was a birthday yesterday. So, happy birthday Sianu. Thank you, be steady. Yeah, sure. So, Totsu Fari as well.
As you know, as I mentioned previously, it's Polkadot-centric conference, the first Polkadot conference that will be taking place in Africa. And here on our landed Kenya, this time we will not be organizing it at Kilefi, but in
Vasha, which is two hours away from Nairobi, the end of March, tentatively March 30th to April 1st. We're still deciding on the dates so that we can accommodate the paragen and ecosystem teams from
you know, Europe and just around, well, outside Africa. We are also, we aim to sponsor some Polkadot ambassadors as well from all around Africa to attend the conference and ensure their attendance and participation in the bootcamp run.
And the conference, we shall proceed with the whole barefoot networking theme, just very grounded and down to worth just an environment that inspires creativity and connection.
Well, the venue actually is also very interesting as it will have a whole slew of animals lurking around, so from zebra's, giraffes, antelopes, monkeys, buffaloes, but you know, will be safe as well.
It's going to be quite the experience, quite a very different feel for a conference. So I urge you all to make sure that you attend or participate. And we'll be sharing this speaker form if you haven't already applied to be a speaker.
and more of that to come as well in terms of applying for the Bhujka Thon and what not. Also, if you're interested in participating and not really participating but contributing to help organize, please feel free to reach out to one of us and would be happy to, you know,
elaborate. For more details on the bootcathon, I would pass the mic to Quasi, but from my end I think that pretty much sums it up. Know me too, maybe can give a word.
I have to say that I'm a little jealous that there's going to be animals. I did want to make a joke that I hope the animals are not doing the hacking and it's the humans doing the hacking on the computers. But yeah, thank you for sharing.
That's annoying. Anybody else want to contribute some more? Alfred, feel free to drop me off and add some of the safari down members. I mean, it's not a solo gig. It's a joint team effort and they're being too humble.
Yeah, it's please. Oh, here we go. We got some more requested and the speaker. All right. All right. G was thank you. Thank you for watching. Perfect. I had some more speakers. Feel free. Just on you and go ahead.
I'll fill in this moment as well to, oh here we go, another request.
On behalf of Vastar, we are excited to support this endeavor that Safari Dow has took on. I think it's important for us as a team. We are a pretty global team. We from Asia to all the way to the US, we expand
and our team spans across the whole globe, which makes things a little difficult sometimes when coordinating meetings, but that's the beauty of it. I think our diversity and opinion and culture add to our strength here at Astar as we continue to grow and continue to onboard new members from around the world.
So to me, it's just natural to start connecting with other communities from around the world that we don't have too much exposure to. So our team also believes that. And one of our esteemed members, BLD, who's on the call right now,
Ben lives right off right off of the coast of if I'm Geographic I'm not geographically inclined, but he lives near Madagascar and a nice little island. So then I'm going to introduce you He's our DevOps engineer pro at what he does and he'll be attending the
that so far on behalf of Astor as well. Hey Ben, you want to give a little intro about yourself? I hope I did okay. Hey guys, I am saying everyone. Yeah, yeah, definitely did okay. I am very excited to be here, actually, into here and see so many people.
You know, just in this space today, and I have to say I'm very impressed when I've seen how many people were also at the Issa Fari. It means, I mean, 400 people is a great success. I know that for being myself an organizer of the Paris.com event,
And I know how it can be, how much work it can be. And doing that as a doubt, I would say, that's even more impressive. So great congratulations to you guys. And I'm very excited to participate. So yeah, I will be
I think I will be speaking about what is our staff or general public because people are coming from everywhere and maybe not only from the polka dot ecosystem but somewhere else and I think I have also a little idea about a workshop to do.
to do the other, but I resolve with those prizes for the DNA. Yeah, and once again, well, congratulations for all that you've done on Safari Doh and let's make this a great event and very excited to help on it.
or that workshop can't wait. And just a shameless blood please follow our eSafari page as well for more updates on eSafari and the Safari.com page to support us as we get this one started. Thank you so much Ben, can't wait to meet you.
Are you in Chaewoon-Yong by chance? That's the island that you're on. I am actually. Oh, quite cool. Beautiful. Looks beautiful. I just wanted to come up here and explain the bouquet pan a little bit.
and maybe Kwasi you can also add to it. So we want to make a very solid foundation for the Polkada ecosystem to really take off and bring value to Kenya's Web 3 ecosystem by how
having a value based bootcamp plus hackathon. What does that mean? So it's a three week program, mostly online and then the last two days will be in person, in real life at the venue with all the animals, eating
and pizza from a clay oven, hopefully we're working on that, but very nature integrated experience. And having ongoing, so the portion that's online, you will have a long time to well
three weeks to come up with a strategy and find team members that are really aligned with a problem that you really identify with and want to solve for your community. And what our goal is to also inspire a lot of Pan-African collaboration. We have a
up to 40 different polka dot community members throughout the continent arriving to Kenya to attend the conference, but also they're going to participate in the hackathon because a lot of them are already developing on polka dot and different parachains.
and they can bring a lot of expertise to newcomers to the community in Kenya. So we really want this to be a cross-pollination kind of opportunity for people to really learn together and not just simply bounty hunt, right?
This is the whole idea. We want real strategies, really valuable ideas that can bring value to the communities having problems on the ground and time and space and mentorship to really develop this idea so that the projects that
come out of the bookathon, have real potential as projects that will take off and really develop the East African and African Polka.ecosystem. Thank you. I don't know if you want to add anything else, Quasit.
Yeah, not really, but I know there's pretty much a bit, but one thing I just like to add about all this and it's actually the barefoot networking
in the nature, which is from our previous events. A lot of people were able to network with a lot of people around the world and for me I felt that was and for all the Safari community it really brought us together working as a
family and built in this kind of chemistry between all the members. And I believe that's the sense period. Safari Dawa always has from the first event that we had. I just wanted to acknowledge that and yeah.
Thank you. And looking forward to it. I really do think we can set a hopefully an ice president for the future moving forward for more events to be held more parachained teams to
join in. We want that to happen. We need that to happen. We're all in this polka dot ss mindset of decentralized and secured network for all of us to use as consumers and builders.
This is exciting for me personally. So I also want to invite anybody else who has any questions for the SafariDow team about the events or how they can get more involved. Please feel free to request. Got some more requests.
This is an open space, feel free. Make a joke. I'm horrible at jokes, but that's why I'm here. Ha ha, that one wasn't too bad.
I don't know if our listeners caught the dates, but if you could share the dates and maybe the location specifically for our new listeners who are joining in. Yeah, good point. You can also, if you check we have a dot safari dot xyz, we have a website up and running with the tentative dates and the boot cover.
and conference details that we've just identified. I think the dates are from March 30 to the 1st of April, April 4, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was over date and then yeah, the bootcamp on happens a bit, a bit longer before that.
Yeah, just join in you can sign up for more information by email. You have a wait list on the website as well So check that out if you'd like to be the first to hear more about the updates on the event I See that Naomi. Thank you Naomi for sharing the discord group
in our post here in Twitter. So feel free to give a follow for Safari Down, join the Discord to get more updates. Again, you can perhaps, like our friends were saying, if you want to help plan or participate in some capacity, feel free to ask.
I know my experience from the last few weeks with Safari now has been amazing. They're really responsive so thanks again for helping us through this and now we're coordinating to participate and hopefully hold a workshop and support the hackathon in our
with our bounty of that we can post here in Astar as well. So if you're a builder and you're interested in building and fulfilling, any type of build that you want, then hook up with us as well. You can join the Astar Discord.
If you want to see what we have, we have some bounties out there right now, but we also want to coordinate with SafariDout to create one that's unique for the event. And if I'm correct, you have a bootcamp in Hackathon that goes on for about a month prior to the event.
Okay, perfect. Yes. Yeah, please check the discord for updates on the dates for the book of unveils and updates also if you submit your interest on our forum.
on their landing page if you're interested in participating in the hackathon. But we still have some meetings with other parachanes this week, so the dates will be finalized probably in the next two weeks.
I had maybe a quick question for Dr. Safari as I know it's a large question because of course Africa is very big but well usually a African community likes to exchange the events at Mont Discord Montouilleur
You can tell about just your community.
So I could answer on that. You know, we could maybe have people in Web 3 are unique and each one likes to just gravitate to their own space. We could not discuss this. It's largely used in the Web 3 space. So we have a discord. But for example, last
When we are doing it Safari, we are active on LinkedIn, we are active here on Twitter, we are active on Discord and on Telegram too and we plan on doing the same. Hopefully we will go active and live with other platforms too. So definitely look out.
Now we are up on Discord and Twitter but definitely more platforms will be rolling up.
All right, perfect. Any other questions, community members or comments?
I just want to say a big thank you to our Polka. Ambassador who we would not have been able to reach paraching teams like Asta without you.
Shout out to my Munat and Kattistos and Ezra. We really, really appreciate you. Thank you so much. And Chris.
And Chris. Thanks to Chris, we are also on our very own Astana Ambassador. It's also the head ambassador of Bulkadov III.
Yes, and Chris, I don't know if Chris Mollies is here right now. Chris Teestos, you're there. Yes, they've always been community. I've seen them around polka dot just supporting and engaging for more than a year now.
It's nice. It's really is that we're networking throughout the bear and then supporting each other throughout this winter. So this is great. Thanks again so far, Dow and everybody here. We're going to continue to continue this dialogue, continue speaking.
And if there's any bigger updates, we're happy to host another space to inform our community members or even partake in an insight of social activity so we can get the word out. I'm really excited. Maybe now I'm going to, I do want to see
tigers and animals and hack with them. So maybe I should reconsider how if I could be in attendance too. Ben, I do want to visit my colleague Ben out there outside of Madagascar. But yeah, thanks again team. Thanks again everyone.
Any last words for our community? Yeah, yeah, I have. We, this is African word, it's Karibu. It means welcome. So we like to say Karibu Safari, which means welcome to the gen. And yeah, Karibu Safari guys, let's make dots of our Arabic.
Awesome, thank you so much. All right, everybody, have a great rest of your day or night wherever you are and Karibu Safari. Awesome, ciao, everyone. Bye, everyone. Bye, everyone.
