Hi, Marcus. Hi, everyone. We'll just wait for it to get back on and then we'll start. Okay.
In the meantime, I won't sing any C-man's 20s because I have a cold.
Yeah, it's a little bit of a disclaimer for you guys already in. Marcus, my name from Dr. Telecom. I have a cold. So if I suddenly go on mute, it's because I have a cough. I want to save your ears. So bear with me for that one.
I think just accidentally we'd take like a perfect.
day to do this. There's no competing World Cup games right now. So thanks everyone for joining. We hope we can make this almost as interesting as the Rocco Spaniel City. Sorry for our friends
from Spain here, but I will say I'm excited from Rockle to be the first real surprise team of this woke up. Anyway, this is not about the woke up, this is not about soccer, this is about something way more exciting and interesting, such a telecom's Web Street strategy.
And there's nobody person to speak to that. Then Marcus, who was on the call here with me, Marcus Shorn, leads global strategic partnerships and works closely with the CEO and leadership team at DT to figure out.
What does make sense in Web 3, Word, D.T. and not just for headline, but really from a deep business perspective. Obviously, the digital company is a public company, so I'm sure Markus you have all kinds of disclaimers. And I guess what we're hoping for.
for in this Twitter spaces is to get a bit of an insight look on how you and the team are thinking about Web Street, the potential news see maybe touch on some of the initiatives that are public, maybe give some more highland thoughts on in other areas.
that are of interest and also touch on the P challenge, which was recently announced in a super exciting program. And my hope is that we can move through some of these things pretty quickly in the first 15-20 minutes and then also leave some space for questions in the
the audience. So if you join this two spaces to ask questions, get them ready. And with that, let's dive right in. Maybe Marcus, you know, it could
starting point and this is something that really when we started working with CT it was surprising to us that there was already quite a good understanding of what this technology can do.
in the company and maybe give the group here just a quick background on you who you came to this and then you know sort of teal the R of Web Street at DT before we dive into some of the current operations in topics.
Yeah, happy to do so. Thank you, Rene. GM everybody, there's a certain markers from Deutsche Telekom running the the Web 3 group, what's the strategy program right now where we try to find roles and space for for telcos in the Web 3 ecosystem. And as we made said,
the disclaimer being a corporate is this is no investment advice we are looking at web 3 we are not looking at crypto and this is also one of the the first learning that we had when we did our education session within all of our companies so to get the people to differentiate
What is a crypto coin and what is map 3 and map 3 we define as public programmable blockchains, you know the the ethereum's the VMs of the world and not the the the not Bitcoin not doge and stuff so it's about the
opportunities that the world computer brings and not about speculating on some coins. So we are not touching on that one. "Dogetelicom is active in this space since 2017. We have our telecom laboratories
Berlin and they were very close to the let's say original crypto web 3 crowd in Berlin so the big chain DB ocean protocol guys and so we we debilt very early with the technology but also as it was a
corporate it was a bit too early because we mentioned being 2017 and people tell you yeah every car and every tree will be a dow and this one is what makes corporate managers lose interest a bit at that time. So we
our endeavors later to sleep a bit, but shortly after, so or or kept running in the background. And we built an impressive, let's say, partner portfolio during the last years. So we we started with with running validator
for various chains like a flow, I guess, was our first chain, then cello came, polka dot, you're not also running liquid-staking ethereum notes and looking at other chains right now which of course I cannot disclose yet. Actually, Marcus is
Yeah, that was so that was kind of the beginning of the conversation class we connected here in Berlin and You know the tech team had already been working on wanting to spin up a validator on Salo and that I think is how the initial connection was made with us
curious and I think from there began kind of a deeper dive into well actually what are like why would tunnels be interested in this and you know I think today you already you know you mentioned you run Bellators there's also you know a forum post on the cell
just put forward around powering records on the cello network. There's a bunch of use cases, but maybe before we go to kind of use cases, I'd love to hear, and I think he wants articulated this to me really well, you know, what sort of spark, especially for telcos because obviously
There's lots of big companies out there getting in the space and are coming into WebSri, but what are sort of the unique areas for what telcos and where do you kind of see maybe also then kind of the unique opportunity? So.
The role of Tercos, we are let's say in the midst of writing down. So everybody from our blockchain team, they have a gut feeling that that free will be huge and that there is a huge opportunity for especially Tercos in this space. But if you then have to explain it to your board and enter
you have to be precise and what you currently have identified are three main points that we always use in the discussion. So telcos have a natural fit in Web 3 because telcos are living decentralized networks since day 1,
So, teleconnetworks are per definition decentralized. So, we feel right at home in decentralized environments where we have to trust all the nodes in this system to Andrew traffic and then stuff. So, this is our home turf. On the other side, we are all
So the second point is we really excel at bridging. So we plug together stuff from Cisco, from Nordtel Networks, from Nokia Ericsson bringing it together with software from other companies. So plugging it together with different tech is also our home to a web
the Excel at really it. And it feels also very web-3 where you have to bridge different protocols and different layers and all the stuff. And the third one is this interesting for the space, I guess. We are new through Converse of Data. So we are used to just, let's say deliver traffic.
to everybody who needs internet traffic. We are not looking into packages. We are not prioritizing and algorithmic these and look at that. We are just plain delivery data. I guess these three points make us very natural fits or tail-caused natural fits in the web 3 space.
Absolutely. And I think this was actually this I remember maybe a quote from one of your colleagues back when when we first or when it was first announced that telecom had bought cell and was going to participate in the network and and and and stake sort of this notion of
and you know, in a way money now traveling kind of on the internet in a way that you know, always has for years, right? And potentially open up new business areas for telecos, right? Going going into financial services. So maybe without, I mean, obviously,
you know, you made this claim, but at a high level, when we touch on use cases, how do you, what is sort of the range, I guess, and maybe what are some things that you see happening, shorter term versus kind of longer term, sort of, you know, kind of the north star, maybe
even beyond the T, but for the broader telephoto ecosystem when it comes to web stream. Yeah, what I see is this lit perceptions put it that way of the other one hand the run of the mill manager as corporate
They read about FTX, they read about crypto-calypse and the meltdown and they are a bit shy and way. But if you really talk with the people who are in the know, who really are on the ground regarding their three, they don't see any crypto-venters. So when they read me to spoke to a
large let's say strategy consultancy yesterday they are very excited we are telecom are around the space but you know that they are not affected by the by the crypto winter or FTX blowouts
So, but it's still taking a bit back or taking a bit wind out of the sales for corporates, but I guess it will pick up fast again. So, once a new year comes, some better news come, then I guess it will take up again.
Yeah, I think that's right. I think what I've been noticing and I will admit somewhat surprisingly, from folks that are not sort of full-time in the space and are tracking everything closely is really this notion where people are distinguishing between what happened with it.
So what would happen generally was some of the things we've seen and effectively centralized organizations and that in a way that was further proof that DeFi and sort of the soundness of decentralized infrastructure actually is what has been intended.
that has been just, you know, running smoothly throughout all these kind of ups and downs. And in a way, it's, yeah, it's kind of interesting and good to see that people are not just saying, oh, it's all bad. Like, let's forget about it. But there is this kind of differentiation happening even
We spoke that there are not full time in the space, but they're looking at it from the outside. It's great to hear that that's kind of, that you've seen that too, sort of a long-year network. Let's come back to this also. Yeah. Oh, yeah. No, yeah, I just wanted to come back to the use cases.
a little bit and maybe touch on some of the things that you and I have talked about a whole range of things that. And again, some of the stuff you were working on and can talk about others, you can talk about it, but take a step through.
a time scale of like what are some of the shorter term opportunities in terms of actual use cases, who are these technology in the context of the articles that you see and then maybe further what is sort of the longer term potential and you know if you want tying into the sort of the advantages of a web stream.
on the short term or let's say already running stuff is of course stuff that already is this out there like internal use cases that tell course do with that three. So there's a company called ClearX, they do roaming settlement automated on a blockchain. So when in the past, Carrier A from country A,
had to cross charge there, they are roaming minutes and megabytes with company B from country B, they had to do this manually with invoicing and stuff. And so a few years ago companies or few take-offs started to do this automated on a blockchain. This is for example stuff.
already running and then building on on from from this experience we are looking of course especially into near carrier use cases you may have seen what what he almost up to it's very interesting idea or business model to to spin up networks
Helium is doing a bit in IoT network, but they also announced something with the mobile in the US regarding a 5G partnership and We are really wanting to to look into these use cases and learn What what what we can yeah how we can change Building or rolling out our network. Yeah, this is very
carrier related. Other stuff which is more consumer focused is a way how we can make it easier for our users to access Web3. You know the discussion will be this custodial wallet, then custodial wallet, what is for the
pros, the others, not so. But here, for example, cello isn't an unique opportunity because as a carrier, we know what treasure or what asset the Nobel numbers. And this was also the reason why we invested in cello, for example, Nobel number, equates wallet address. This is a mass
game changer. And this is why we really want you to drill down on these ideas. How can we make it very easy to send digital assets across the globe to your friends, to your family via mobile number? You're sending money as easy as texting. Yeah, it's an insane proposition.
I agree. Yeah. And maybe it was that. I mean, that's kind of a maybe a nice way to transition to the the teach challenge, you just announced and of course were partners, but maybe in your own in your own words, what are you, what are you most excited when you think about what could, what can come from the premium?
and maybe for folks who are not familiar with it, if you want to skip a quick overview and it's looking at the sort of avatars here in the car. I see a few builders from the ecosystem and yeah, I think it'd be exciting to learn firsthand why.
telecom team, we decided to even spin up a web3 excelled with the program and we're hoping to get out of it. So the telecom challenge, www.telecomchallenge.com is a start-up or I.D. incubation program that that telecom and team mobile
are running for three years now. So this is third iteration. And he wants to give teams an idea, the opportunity to come out of this idea space more into mass market territory. So from from the earth space into Main Street, this is the idea
the opportunity we want to give to startups and teams. And there are three especially because we felt the time was ripe for it now. I was back in the day, also launch manager of iPhones and Android and marketplaces and I felt the energy of the
the app rush so people started to build their own apps and build new business models around it. And that three felt the same, you know, from a timing point of view. And then so we used the opportunity to having this established platform of T-Challenge to now twist it to Web 3. And we are looking in
The big question that everybody has in the industry or in the factories asking what are real world use cases? So this we partnered with for A-brands, let's say we have Corsello, we have Chainlink, we have the Graph and we have FireBank.
blocks or all four partners of Deutsche Telekom to come up with what can real people do with Web 3? What can organizations, what can companies do with Web 3? That is the ideas.
build us out of the source and build us in a chat who already applied. So we have roughly one on a plus submissions right now, but it's not too late. You can submit to mid-January and I hope you use it with your ideas, which then all the
For the spring next year, with the final teams we select, we want to prove our concepts. We want to really see what we don't tend to comment. We mobile together with the teams, with the ideas we can do in this space.
That's fantastic. Yeah, look, I'm really, I mean, you know this, I'm a big fan, massive fan of the program because I feel, I mean, there's obviously other accelerator programs out there, but the opportunity to tap into sort of the Urge Telecom team mobile.
brain trust and expertise, especially when thinking through go-to-market and taking things from an idea to something that could scale. I mean, you probably have the number here, but I think collectively, does Chitalacom and Timo both serve? What is it called?
1 billion people around the world. Yeah, this is the nice little number we've done that of course always. Now we have 240 million mobile users across the globe. And you know, thinking mobile number is one of the address and you know, it's a huge
opportunity. Yeah, and that's coming honestly that's why we've been really excited and it's been fun spinning just time with you but with the various teams within the organization and I think if we you know we're all here passionate about true mass adoption for Web3 and another
talking just about someone buying, you know, an NFT, some words for getting about it, but really empowering sort of poor habits, poor sort of need, or needs that people have around the world. And I think, yeah, you guys are in just a
really unique position to be a partner to the broader WebStreespace and make that happen. Of course it's going to take time but it's been exciting to work together. Maybe it was that I'll open it up to the
to see if they're their question and while people are getting their questions ready, Marcus maybe let me let me ask you this and this is kind of maybe a bit of a prediction where
do you see the space? What do you see as the big wave as we come out of this kind of crazy weird year? Where do you see the big opportunities next year's and web street broadly? It doesn't have to be related to DT but just stuff maybe that you're personally excited about.
Yeah, so I'm personally very excited about would be the space of I call it utility NFTs, you know, R that FTs music NFTs always always great. But to get the real real world every day use cases, you know, it's
What is in NFT? So we are looking at some theoretical constructs or prototypes regarding what if the NFT would be a ticket for a music event? What could you tie around this? Or be neutralizing offers
shopping offers, you know, Shopify spoke always about this tokenized commerce idea, you know, using the NFT as an identifier for fan bases that can connect with other brands and stuff. This area I feel very interesting about, and I have not seen
it correct yet but this would be the other thing not to underestimate is the defy but with real yields. Goldfinch or centrifuge are doing all other spin to it ethics hubs
from the cello ecosystem, doing, let's say, fair finance business models, which usually would not be reachable for mass market audiences. This is also a space where I am very excited about. So re-fire as you all hear, or to call it.
Beautiful. Yeah, I give that a full support. Great. Well, let's let's let's have in some questions. Who is a question? Raise your hand and then we'll bring you here on the stage and yeah, any
Hi guys, may I or would you want to select someone? No, you're right. You are right. Hi guys. Maybe it's maybe it's because yourself just briefly and then ask you a question. Yeah, well, my name is Tolga. You know, how can I say, over 20 years and I too already.
And then lots of projects in my past and since now almost a half year, we're building a decentralized application, fully EVM compatible. And I just wanted to know because I just came across this challenge of budget telecom. And our product, actually our
is we already have a working product, yeah, is that MVP stage almost at product version one stage and could we still apply to the challenge? Yeah, okay. Yeah, the challenge itself is if you go to the site very broadly formulated because we want to give
ideas, the same ideas like serious A teams, we also have very very highly funded serious A teams already applying so but it would be unfair you know to to universities or three guys in the garage kind of teams so everybody can apply it's what and we have different award categories for for ideas for finished
products and then so yeah, okay thank you so we're looking forward to it because you just said for example NFTs with utility real world business use cases that is actually what you see in the next future to come onto the blockchain in crypto we believe the same and we believe also that this is a
huge potential for even the established businesses currently in the Web2 environment to transition into Web3 blockchain or a decentralized environment. So we also have the same kind of expectations for the future of blockchain and crypto and it has many many use cases in our opinion and actually our project has
Really in high-use case coming from this world and could probably even potentially be very very interesting for touch telecom So I'm going to apply and Marcus if you don't mind I would also like to DM you about our project Yeah, then you can have a also direct look at it and if you have any questions or what like the experience
change something with that information anytime. We'll be looking forward to it. The MEO, the MEO logo, look me up at LinkedIn. Might be easier. Not sure if this is the M thing I hear at Twitter. It's working in the future. In the window. All right, thank you.
Next up we got Marco from Impact Market. Hey Marco. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,#
I co-founder of probably one of the biggest maps on cello that provides a conditional basic income in the most vulnerable communities in developing countries. And as you know, like Web Tree in order to work, it requires some connectivity
and mobile devices. In some of the communities that we are in, that's quite the challenge. And in some countries, with some specific areas, we actually try to partner with local telecommunication companies that have like old
smartphones and can provide for example access to the internet to our app for example or to our wallet in specific. So I was wondering if DTS some kind of part of the
have to strategy to expand, bring connectivity to more remote areas or even try to facilitate access to some smartphones or old smartphones that probably now people don't use, but SELO is very mobile
friendly, you don't see any kind of smartphone, so that will be fine. And if yes, that would love to learn more about that. Thanks. Yeah, thanks, Marco. So regarding the
We looked at some of your mentioned ideas regarding donating you smartphones and having in coverage and stuff. But what we found harder to look at is that it's our footprint. We are big in Europe and in the US and less in the country.
impact market is working in. So for us it would be, we found it too hard to collect phones and ship them across the globe and stuff. But other ideas that could be interesting in this space are we are looking at use cases for donating connectivity or
I think around this there could be some opportunities to be built. We are not actively making it. It could be managed. If we have one fixed
line connectivity in the area, add up a special router with spin up a small mobile network. This is stuff that we hope to see coming out of the challenge, not pitching ideas here, but this could be interesting. Right, thank you.
And one other point that we're also, let's say, loosely looking into it, is let's say if we played around border with the source, but you know, if we cannot donate to
to these kind of countries, but how we can enable our customers to do this. If you're thinking about all the sustainability goals of the UN and our customers want to contribute, how could they
be possible, you know, how can you put a twist on loyalty programs, how can you put a twist on even devices via blockchain? Very interesting, yes, we'll think about that. Yeah, thank you.
Thanks, Marco. Awesome. I'm looking at the clock here. We're already over time, but the market is amazing. Yeah, amazing color here. And just, yeah, every conversation with you opens up also some new ideas from me. So thank you.
So much for joining today. I know you're super busy. It's you know you're in the approaching and you're You have a lot on your plate. So I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day and spending time here with the community and yeah, I'm sure we'll get
a chance to do this some work that obviously maybe also through the tea challenge there's going to be an opportunity to meet more teams. It sounds like you know some of the cellular community teams were ready pretty well. I kind of saw you wrapping some names there. It's amazing.
And yeah, look to all the folks on the call if you have other questions. Drop them in the chat and we can continue the conversation maybe asynchronously. And again, thanks, Murkus, so much for your time here. Thanks everyone for joining and have a great rest of your day everyone.
Yeah, thanks for inviting and good day forever you are on this globe. Thanks all. Thanks everyone. Bye.
