I'm really excited to see that for this first episode of Let's Talk Gaming.
Tonight, there's a lot that I want to talk about, actually.
I'll start by saying that for those of you that are familiar with Merit Circle, with Beam,
this first episode is a little bit of an introduction episode because, first of all, we have a new speaker in our middle, which is Ashley.
Can I get some heart emojis from all of you listeners for Ashley, who's tuning in tonight for the first time?
And second of all, we have kept this episode a little bit close to house with inviting Brendan, our CTO, Stephen, head of BD, and Cooper, who is with Avalanche.
And what I would love to talk about to you today is, again, gaming, a little bit about Merit Circle, a little bit about Beam, and, of course, all the exciting stuff that we are doing.
But I'll stop there for now.
I would love to bring Ashley to the space as a speaker.
And, yeah, Ashley, please introduce yourself.
First of all, welcome to Merit Circle.
You're not new to Twitter spaces, but you'll be telling a little bit about that yourself.
I'm not new to Twitter spaces, but I am new to the Merit Circle family, and I'm so excited to be here, everybody.
My name's Ash, and, again, I'm incredibly excited to just jump on in here with all of you in the Merit Circle family.
I'm really looking forward to connecting with everyone, growing our spaces.
We have some awesome ideas, like, just bubbling and brewing in the background, and I can't wait to help implement them and bring them into, you know, into light as we move forward in building out our platform.
I'm looking forward to expanding the gaming ecosystem as a whole and just diving into some really interesting and fun conversations.
So, yes, I have been working in the Web3 gaming space for about two years now, most recently with Star Atlas, which is an MMORPG being built on Solana, if you guys are unfamiliar.
I got my – I just accepted my co-host speaker role.
Thank you for sending that over.
While there, my focus was building out their spaces in media, contributing to community growth and partnership connections.
And for a little bit more info on my professional background, I'll go ahead and pin a tweet to the top for you guys in just a minute.
Let's get things rolling, Marco.
Let's go ahead and jump into our panelists and see who it is that we're talking to today.
How are you doing, my friend?
Just got back from Token 2049 as of last week.
Excited to be in this space.
There's a lot happening in gaming, so perfect place to talk about it.
So, Stephen, for those that – I'm sure we have a lot of the OG Merit Circle family in the audience, but for some of those that are new joining us today,
could you just kind of give a little brief intro as to who you are and what it is that you do with Merit Circle and with Beam?
So, I've been at Merit Circle for four months now.
Before that, I've been in crypto since 2017, professionally working in advisory and investment roles in BD at various other companies.
I'm now at Merit Circle as head of partnerships and investments, so running a team about trying to get the best games, building on Beam, working with them, doing playtesting with them, working out how we can best support them through their journey within Web3.
And they can both be native Web3 teams, but also we're working with a lot of Web2 games companies that are new in the space, and we support them for a journey.
Well, thank you so much for joining us today.
I know it's a little late for you right now, so thank you for hopping in here with us in the middle of the night.
Let's also say hello to Brandon.
Brandon is also a part of the Merit Circle family.
How are you doing today, Brandon?
If you don't know me, my name is Brandon.
I'm the CTO at Merit Circle.
I joined back in February, and since then, we have been really focused on this thing we're calling Beam, you know, this, like, opinionated game.
I'm sorry, this opinionated chain when it comes to gaming.
We didn't like where the gaming space was going for Web3, and especially for all these great Web2 games, it seemed hesitant to dip their toes in the waters.
And that's kind of what we're trying to fix, and we can dip into some of that today.
I'm just excited to be here.
We do have, let's see, Coop, you're up here joining us.
You know, why don't we just say hello to, bleh, bleh.
I'm getting a little, I'm a little flustered.
I'm excited to be up here again.
Coop, how are you doing today?
Do you just want to say hello to everybody and introduce yourself?
And then we'll dive into our discussion.
We have some exciting stuff coming.
I'm just here to support the Merit Circle team.
I run marketing for gaming on Avalanche.
Love everything you guys are doing.
So, here today, in case you have any questions, but also just to support.
I spend a lot of time in spaces.
I can share some wisdom that I've gained from other DGens out there.
Are you still cuddling with your cat, Coop?
You're taking a break or the cat is taking a break?
That's the real question.
Let's go ahead and hop into our conversation.
Before we do, though, I did pin a few tweets at the top where you can find more info on Merit Circle, on Beam.
You guys do have a really cool contest running right now with Castle Blackwater, which is one of the games being developed with Beam.
And, you know, it's a good place for you guys to take a peek and see what else they are building.
Also, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop them in the little chat below.
Marco and I will be in there.
So, if you have any questions, pop them in there and we will go ahead and ask our speakers up here.
Or if anybody wants to join us, raise their hand as well.
Yeah, that being said, let's talk gaming.
Yeah, I'll start today's space off by a little bit of an introduction about how we want to go about those Twitter spaces from here on.
Because it's called Let's Talk Gaming and it is for a reason.
This first episode kind of acts like an introduction episode, like I just mentioned.
So, we want to get you familiar with Merit Circle.
What are we doing with Beam?
You know, what are we doing on that angle?
And I can say for myself, you know, everything that is happening around Beam right now, around the whole ecosystem of Web3 Gaming to me is super exciting.
And we're seeing this back on Twitter as well.
I mean, I tweeted about it this morning too.
I wake up, I open my Twitter, I see tons of tweets about MC Beam on my timeline and that's super exciting.
And I think for you that are new to Merit Circle, we are a gaming DAO.
And so, one of the major things happening right now is, of course, us building Beam.
But there's actually an ongoing governance proposal right now on the forum that is talking about rebranding or basically swapping our MC token to a Beam token.
Which is a very interesting topic that we'll be spinning a tweet about in a little bit as well.
I do encourage you to check that out.
But other than that, the episodes from here on, we are going to talk about gaming.
And so, what you can expect from the next episodes is we're going to bring on all sorts of guests from different studios.
Maybe even people that are playing the game, you know, on the user side or on the influencer side.
We have a lot of ideas like Ashley already mentioned.
And I'm just super excited to be talking about them together with Ashley throughout those different episodes.
So, yeah, Ashley and I are co-hosting this thing.
We're still getting a little bit used to that.
So, I'm super excited about that as well since it is the first time I'm co-hosting a space.
But it's at the same time, you know, getting a lot of energy out of it already.
So, I'm very much looking forward to that.
And, yeah, I think that being said, Ashley, do you want to take it away with some questions?
And I just wanted to add, like, you know, I think we're also looking into expanding into some video content as well.
So, definitely just keep your eyes on what Merit Circle has cooking because we are really cooking stuff up in the background.
And we're getting ready to deliver some really awesome content for all of you in the Merit Circle family.
And hopefully the broader family as well, right?
I think something with talking with Marco and the rest of the team, something we really want to do and help, like, nurture is the gaming ecosystem as a whole, right?
We don't want to just be focused on one chain.
We want to focus on gaming.
And I think that that's something that's really important.
We want to just help drive this narrative that we are here.
The Web3 gaming ecosystem is here.
We are building and we're here to stay.
And we want to do our roles to support that ecosystem.
And we're going to have some really awesome conversations coming from Let's Chat Gaming with Marco and myself.
And, yes, we are getting used to our roles as co-hosting.
But I got to say, like, I already love the Merit Circle team.
And, you know, something I'm really excited about is the idea of Beam, what you guys are building with Beam.
We have Brandon here today.
We're going to have him discuss a little bit about that.
For those of you that might just be rolling in or are not a part of the Merit Circle family just yet,
you will be converted after this conversation, I guarantee you.
But if you're not a part of the Beam or Merit Circle family just yet, Brandon, I got to say,
I recently did a deep dive on Beam.
And I'm completely blown away with what you guys are doing.
And it has me even more excited about joining the Merit Circle family because it's awesome.
So for those in the audience that may be new or unfamiliar,
could you just give them a brief overview of what Beam is right now?
Sure. Yeah. It's kind of changed a lot over the last several months.
Right when we started talking about Beam, it was simply a subnet that we had started with Avalanche
through a partnership with them.
And we chose to go with Avalanche and build a subnet there because of a variety of features and some control.
We had more knobs that we could turn.
And we wanted to figure out, like, making sure that the gas was always low for everybody
because it's about gaming and volume transactions, right?
I think it's so much more now.
I'm actually really excited where this went.
So actually, I'm not going to quote them because I didn't ask if I could quote them.
But we were talking to a gaming partner yesterday.
And when we described, they said,
can you just tell me what this is instead of the marketing material?
And when I described it, they said, damn, I wish this existed a year ago.
We would have shipped the game by now.
And I said, that's great.
I should have asked them for a pull quote in that moment.
But anyway, they did say it.
And so what we're building now is really this SDK on top of Beam.
And what makes it different and sets it apart from everything else is all due to what's,
you know, in the academic term is called account abstraction.
But really what it means is, hey, let's move away from these, like, wallets where people
have recovery phrases they have to worry about.
And let's start thinking about using smart contracts as wallets instead.
So what we call accounts or smart contract accounts.
And what's neat about that is that it didn't,
we didn't have to do it the way everyone else was doing it.
So we don't force authentication, meaning we don't make people sign in through Beam
or anything like that, right?
But the game developers get to do this kind of stuff behind the scenes.
All they have to do is send us a unique ID in their system.
And we can do all this stuff server side.
So we get some extra security benefits by doing it server side.
But also it's a much smoother flow and a much more familiar flow,
especially people coming from a Web 2 background.
When we were at GDC in March, we saw that they announced, like, hey, MetaMask,
you can use it in Unity right now.
You can connect your wallet.
And we were kind of disappointed because it was like, you know,
connecting the wallet isn't the problem.
Like, getting the wallet and understanding the wallet, that's the problem.
And that's what gamers don't really want in their games.
I think that's part of the issue.
So really what we've been tackling with this Beam SDK is twofold.
First and foremost, it's like, you know, shovels and pickaxes, right?
We're building tools for other developers.
That's a really fun space to be when you're as a developer.
So it's really fun to build these things.
So we're building that first and foremost for developers
because ultimately they're going to make the game and we want games to be better.
But we also want to support gamers too.
So we're working on some stuff for gamers that, you know,
will be pretty interesting in the coming months.
I don't want to spoil too much.
You got to give us a little alpha, Brandon.
I'm just playing with you.
But, you know, I guess since Beam recently migrated to Mainnet, correct?
So we have Mainnet validators up and running.
We've been doing this developer preview window mostly on Testnet,
but we do have our Mainnet facilities up and going, yeah.
So then for our listeners who are familiar with everything,
what does this mean and what are the current, I guess,
are there any further developments that you could share with us?
If you don't want to, you don't have to.
Yeah, no, I mean, we've got to keep some of that a little secret
and in the back room for right now, right?
I won't spoil it at all, of course.
I want to have some surprises left to spread out.
But, yeah, no, basically we've been opening this developer preview window
for a little while now, right?
We're trying to gather feedback.
We want to make sure the SDK, we're making changes,
and we want to make sure we're working with game developers
who are okay with us making those changes while they're working on their games.
And that's been going pretty well so far.
I think we're getting to a point where the product's maturing quickly.
We definitely have some features we're going to be adding,
things around like shared inventories, lending.
I think, well, I'd rather call it borrowing instead of lending
because when you think about lending, I think about DeFi,
and I want to think about, like, hey, you want to borrow my game?
You want to borrow my inventory?
You want to borrow my sword?
There's some cool things we can do with that.
There is a mobile app that I can hint to that we're working on
that will allow a lot of convenience for your average gamer.
And that's sort of going to be, again, we're serving two audiences here.
There's the game developers, and then there's the gamers themselves.
So we're going to keep pushing the SDK further and further,
supporting more basically languages and different clients
that we can export that, or I should say compile our SDK into.
And then for the gamer side, there's going to be more consumer-facing tools
that will be pretty powerful.
But right now we're still talking to game partners
and with legal counsel about what we can and can't have in the initial app.
So that's why I'm being a little hesitant to say much there.
We've got to keep some of that alpha a little behind the scenes
until we're ready to announce it further.
But I've got to say, I love what you're doing because I think
there really is that disconnect with onboarding Web2 gamers into the space.
It is so clunky still, right?
Even just onboarding into crypto is clunky in general.
And so with what you guys are developing, it's going to help streamline that
and hopefully help branch out and onboard more people into our space
and help them understand what it is that's being built here.
And I think it's so cool.
Marco, I saw you on mute.
Did you want to add to that, my friend?
Yeah, I was going to add on to that.
I mean, while you're mentioning we can share a little bit of alpha,
obviously we don't want to spoil too much.
But at the same time, I'll say this.
Like Brendan just said, this past couple of months
has kind of been this development mode, right?
Where it's almost like a stealth mode.
You're building on all sorts of ants
and you're talking with all those different game studios.
And the exciting thing for me to see is that, you know,
community members are already picking this up on Explorer 2
is but first couple of games, you know,
starting to deploy little things here and there
to figure things out on the chain, you know, on mainnet
rather than on the testnet that we did before.
And so a little bit that I wanted to talk about with you, Brendan,
is the way that we're going about the launch.
Because, yeah, to the listeners here,
I think if you are familiar with Beam,
you've kind of seen that we're not making a massive big boom
out of this mainnet launch.
And the reason for that is very simple.
I mean, the games are still migrating to Beam.
It's kind of like a working document, if you will.
But it doesn't mean that there are a lot of super exciting things happening.
And I think very soon, the first couple of games
now migrating to Beam are going to be playable.
And so, Brendan, yeah, I would love to get some of your insights
into how is it going so far with the first couple of games
bridging towards Beam, building on Beam.
And how are you looking towards a little bit of a,
I would say, more crowded or exposure kind of launch
in terms of actual gameplay and doing things
around this whole Beam ecosystem?
Yeah, that's a great question.
So in terms of the games we've been working with so far,
where we have your typical Web3 games
who are familiar with the space, maybe have their own contracts
and are more familiar with the lingo.
But we talked to plenty of games that are not really sure
And that's kind of where this all began in the first place.
That was a common question we kept hearing.
And so what I like about where the Beam SDK has been headed
is that it really just takes away so much of that lingo
and so much of the Web3 aspects that you would normally need to know
It just takes it all away.
That's what the SDK is for.
Just get back to developing the game.
You can make these on-chain actions happen when you want to.
And you don't have to necessarily think about RPC nodes
or block reorgs or stuff like that.
That shouldn't even be a thing you have to learn about ever
as a game developer, in my opinion, in our opinion.
So, sorry, what was the second part of that question?
The first part was about the game developers
and where we're headed with the...
We've like a more of a crowded launch
when the games are on-chain
and we want to do some things with our community.
Like, what was our planning there?
I think we could share a little bit of alpha
around how we are thinking about going that
without spilling all the beans.
But I think it's exciting to talk about.
Well, when it comes to those different audiences
when we think about the game developer audience,
like, always be shipping.
Like, we're just always shipping code, right?
When that comes to RPC nodes
that they might need to unblock them,
setting up load balancers,
pushing the product further,
handling swaps between tokens,
Like, we're just going to keep shipping that
and pushing it and pushing it
and pushing it so that game developers
always have what they need.
So that will always just be a rolling thing.
And that's going to be true
for, like, validators as well.
But when it comes to game,
you know, more consumer-facing apps,
yeah, we can do some more interesting launches around that.
hey, here's a new product we're bringing to the market
built on top of Beam using that Beam SDK.
We're going to keep iterating on this product as well.
kind of this same thing that Amazon did with AWS
where they brought AWS to light
it's a very common phrase now,
but like eating your own dog food.
hey, let's build AWS the service
and then open up that service for everybody else.
And so we're building these things
the same thing that all of our game developer
it's nice that that product is this,
it's really important to us,
not just game developers.
We want to make sure it's a really rich,
that anyone can build what they want on
without feeling like they're stuck on certain rails.
I want people to be imaginative with their games.
I think we're slowly going to shift
towards the gaming side with you, Stephen.
But I think one more question for you right now,
in a development team currently?
you've just shipped too many now.
obviously there's a lot to do,
is it an actual oil machine in your eyes?
Are there still things you want to work on?
I'll give you the real insights here.
There's a lot of stress around doing all this
because we're building like the baseline of everything
that we're then going to be building on top of.
So there's a lot going on right now.
So that's why we're sort of
shipping things as we can
and like holding back some things
in terms of product launches.
It's a lot for the team to take on.
There's a lot of productivity happening.
to have that kind of momentum behind you.
we're pretty good at getting through our,
any hurdles or any problems that come our way.
But there have been a couple of times
that we've been working on certain parts
that doesn't happen that commonly
And it's happened a few times here,
which is a really good sign.
And it makes us really think,
like really start to dig into stuff
what are we not thinking about?
what are we not thinking about?
we've thought about it all.
So I'm actually very happy
The team has been gelling really well.
We're hiring more people.
We're going to keep hiring
I don't want to overhire.
kudos to the development team
for just keeping the pace
it's continuous shipping.
When it comes to the chain,
I game in the middle of the night.
through this whole tech speech
and you're not alienated yet
and gone out of this space,
And I think this is an amazing moment
towards more gamer language.
do you want to take it away
with some of the next questions
So that's what makes this space
we don't always highlight it enough
what's going on behind the scenes
and how you guys are building
and how you're making things
Than just traditional gaming
it is something that's really fun.
I can't wait to learn more
and be more a part of this process
So I love learning about this stuff.
that he can actually build tech
Most people can't do both of those.
and the fact that you're,
you're able to manage your team
we just kind of dove into the,
the techie side of things
we're ready to dive into some more
Every day we get a little bit closer
with development on beam,
a little bit closer to that,
seeing more progress for that
because ultimately that's what we want
to see is more games being brought
and being built out for everybody.
this is where I'm going to hop over
There's a saying in hockey,
Skates where the puck's going,
where do you see this industry,
when it comes to projects
building a high quality game
can be two or three years
So we're only just starting
to see some of the best looking games
It's quite a long process.
there's still not many games
realize what they even are,
have gas in their account.
we haven't seen it take off.
And that's one of the biggest things
of like default style games.
and what we're seeing now
like all those opportunities
a pure onboarding experience
and on that user experience,
this early access launch,
Telegram chats, thanks for
hanging in there and being
with us because, yeah, it's
times to keep building, but
I'm just just excited to see
And I got to say, Marco, I'm
excited for our next Twitter
What are we going to talk
Well, I mean, I think, you
know, Merit Circle has such
an awesome relationship with
left, but I think maybe we
should dig in a little bit
deeper with Avalanche and
our relationship with them
really awesome episode to
So I hope everybody tunes in
Again, I am excited to just
be back up here with all of
you guys and to be talking
Twitter space that we have,
our new series, Let's Talk
Gaming, with me and Marco.
And like Marco said, we've
got a lot of awesome things
cooking in the background
brainstorming and bringing
I think we're going to get
some more video in there,
which is going to be a lot
of fun and just good times
So, yes, today we had we had
And I'm surprised we managed
to keep it, well, not keep
almost keep it within the
there's, again, so much to
And we're not just going to
being said, I want to thank
everyone again for tuning
Any closing words from you,
I think we had an awesome
Make sure you follow along
with them so that you get
all the updates coming out
Merit Circle does a really
awesome job of keeping the
community updated through
their Medium articles, through
their Twitter tweets, or I
That just doesn't have the
It's still called tweets,
That sounds like X posts.
We also dove into a little
bit about where we see the
guys, for hopping up here and
sharing your insights and
little bit about Token 2049.
I think this was a really
And we will catch you all
Stay up on those updates and
we'll let you know when we
have our next space coming to
Until then, hope everybody
I think, you know, like I
said in the beginning of the
space, we are aiming for the
Twitter spaces to be bi-weekly.
Now, Brandon mentioned we
off-site in two weeks from
So, most likely we're doing
the next episode in three
weeks, but we'll make sure
So, if you're not following
convinced you throughout this
And I think that being said,
And, again, thank you for
tuning in and have a great
Twitter and I always love
We'll catch you next time.
