uh launch an nft project i feel like we do our best work when like you're not supposed to do the
thing you know like i feel like when everyone's saying like don't do that that's when we like
we find our our good stuff so i'm excited man june's gonna be fun i agree a lot of stuff cooking
i agree and when it comes to like uh like you said man when it comes to like the market conditions
and what's going on in the market i feel like goblin town that doesn't matter for you guys you guys got on smash anyway and you guys came out during the worst time
to begin with well that's the funny thing is like we could launch during bad launch during bad times
or good well good times everyone can launch anything but it's harder to launch during bad
times so um yeah man we uh we got a lot i mean obviously we've got the video game and
we've been going to a lot of these conventions we actually were just accepted to um on july 19th
uh goblin town's gonna be uh some of the team's gonna be in la at uh um the red bull like i don't
know if people follow like red bull like the brand. They're doing, they have this thing called the Soapbox race.
You've probably seen, like, clips on, like, you know, either YouTube or TikTok or Instagram.
It's, like, these crazy cars people put together, and they race them.
And, like, the point is to, like, crash them, and it's supposed to be funny and fun.
Anyway, we got accepted, so we're going to have a Gobletown vehicle at the red bull um soapbox on july 19th in la
funny enough we actually uh the the guy who's running racing in our thing he happens to own the um
i don't know how public this is but he happens to own the uh i mean it's not public who's writing
our thing but like this specific piece of him he happens to own like the record for
um there's something
called uh

it's like when you like drive from like east coast to west
coast back to east coast it's like
illegal like the fastest time

It's just like a fun game trying to like get our brand into like more of a of like a like just build out the brand and make it something
like more mainstream and then we've been we've been um we've been cooking on on the web 3 side
we've been we've been playing around with a bunch of different ideas and things and um june's gonna
be a fun month i mean we can't talk about too much yet but we are
you know before June is over

and I honestly think that like

like everything is going to start to really start humming soon in this space.

would think oh they're gonna adopt solana or bitcoin or something they're not gonna adopt
anything they're all gonna make their own they're all making their. Yeah, I thought it would be XRP. Dude, XRP.

When I worked at Diwala a decade ago, the XRP team came in.
Because we were the way you got money into exchanges.
And the XRP team came in.
XRP was like, I think they gave us like 100, no so like 100 000 xrp for like it was like worth a
dollar at the time and they came in and there's this really smart guy who's like trying to explain
it and we all walked out we're like he sounds smart but i have no fucking idea what this guy
just said like all of us were decently intelligent people and literally had
no idea um then it like pumped like and they all gave us like a free like hundred thousand
like he was like oh play with it because they wanted to basically use us as like the gateway
in to get money in um but i still remember that meeting of like imagine just someone talking for
like 45 minutes you literally it's like a timeshare meeting it was like i it's really hard to explain how like he was literally speaking a different language
but he was speaking english um and uh i you know i bet if he would have said it like now i would
fully understand what he's saying but i feel like it's like us talking to like a normie
of what how he was talking to us i think he was either like totally like
making up or he was so in the future that we just couldn't follow him i i don't know which one
probably a little bit both to be honest i feel like bro i mean i know when you say the whole like
talking and no one's understanding them and you guys are all intelligent i get all that because

it happens a lot in the crypto space like it sounds great but it ends up being a whole lot

like okay um and then when it was worth like when it was like at like two or three dollars i was
like i gotta find this money and so they gave it it was on like gate or something gate.io but then
like gate changed like six or five seven years ago like so one of
the things changed and i basically told my co-founder we were both at the wallet at the
time and then we ended up starting a company called social rank but i told him if he found
it i'd give him 10 and i swear to god it took him like seven minutes and he found it and got it and
he took he took his 10 um and so uh i i kept selling my sold some it was a while back uh and
and i feel like i like so i i think i did like for like a dollar i did fairly well but um yeah i don't
i'm not i'm not a i'm not a xrp holder or like i'm not sure what they're up to these days i'm i'm
i mean i play around in the trenches but i buy like i've i've been
just a bitcoin holder for since 20 20 uh 2012 when i joined damn dowala and well listen it's
damn but then like i've if i really thought about it i'd cry about how much i've
had and sold and used for stupid i but i mean there's a if you google my name and and and
and the new york nicks i i bought nick tickets with bitcoin in like 2012 2013 there's an article
about me um they'll probably end up being like the most expensive nick tickets. Not even dude.

And the reason I had so much
is only because we were like,
Diwalla was the first way you got money in and out of crypto or one of the
first ways you'd basically fund your Diwalla account and then move it to
Docks and, you know, BitInstant and Bitstamp and, and all these other places.
And so when, um, the worst thing that ever happened is when, when Mt.
Gox imploded and Silk Road went down,
Diwalla was implicated in the lawsuit and we were all over.
If you read like the docs on it,
we were all over the lawsuit.
And so the team,
like we were backed by like Union Square Ventures and Dresden Horowitz,
whatever.
I ran business development around the New York office.
they told us to sell all of our coins.
And so like I did,
cause I was, wasn't thinking for myself and
i just you know i sold them and so but i moved like one or two bitcoin over to like coinbase
because i and i got lucky oh i i actually moved them over before they were on because they were
on mount gox and then i moved them over um but uh what i ended up doing a few years ago is I basically have like 50% of like my
crypto in Bitcoin 25 and Ethereum 25 and soul.
But what I do is I just have an automatic buy $150 a month.
I don't even think about, sorry, $150 a week.
I don't even think about it.
It just goes from my bank account to my Coinbase or whatever,
whatever, like I'm using. And I just, and that's been happening for years now. And that should
just compounds. And so that, that I would recommend, and by the way, it's never too late
to start that I would recommend everyone, and maybe $150 isn't the right number for you.
It could be $30, it could be $10, it could be, you know be 10 it could be you know five dollars just set
it up don't even think about it automate it and just have it buy from like whatever bank you use
to automatically buy and just buy it and if you want to stake it and earn on it you can do that
but if you like just buy um and don't even think about it and you'll like look back like two years
you'll be like holy shit like i was reading about a guy this morning who that adds up who did that fifty dollars a day or a week for seven years
and now he's over a million and he only invested 90 000 so yeah no no and that's and like i'm i'm
setting up to just forever i'm never gonna stop there's never a bad time like you're just basically
try to be like your own version of michael saylor you know and be be your broke-ass version of michael saylor and buy just just buy
whatever you feel comfortable with uh weekly um and and automate it so you don't have to think
about it and set it up and you know oh like maybe you could you've like if you're feeling
uncomfortable about how much is coming out then you're doing too much. It needs to be something where it's like, I can go out to dinner or I can buy some more Bitcoin type of thing.
A nice dinner.
And so if that nice dinner is $30, then that's a nice dinner.
But I recommend that.
And then you're just not even thinking about it.
And then you're, that's how you build wealth,
man.
That's how you actually,
that's how you really do it.
So I'd recommend,
I mean,
obviously I'd play around and I buy coins and,
you know,
I see a friend sends me,
I just bought,
you know,
Trump versus Elon or president versus Elon or whatever.

This guy's been making money his whole life,
but he's so freaking humble, yo.

money than I can even imagine in crypto.

It's funny, you know,
I'm... I'm not that old i actually just turned uh 38 yesterday um
this year's my birthday and um it's funny like you know i've been in i've my career sort of
started in like 20 2008 2009 2010 um and uh you know so i've been i've been in this space for like 15 17 years i've seen like
enough enough shit like i've seen good things bad things i've always sort of believed that like
you didn't have to sort of be directionally correct like there's been a few times where i've
been like just in the right area and like it didn't really work and i've had some friends that were
like in similar places there's a friend of mine um he went to like top tier ivy league school
right out of school he raised money from some of the biggest vcs for his startup and it was like
deemed one of the next he was like the next mark zuckerberg that's what everyone was calling him
and his startup didn't end up working out and basically since then he's been chasing that
um in the wrong way like just all of his peers ended up starting multi-million dollar companies
some even billion dollar companies um all of like super crazy success. And he like didn't get it right on the first try,
but he was like, he's so smart
and he's so ahead of the curve,
but he just got like too caught up
on like chasing the wrong things
and just being jealous of all the people around him
versus like what he should have done,
which is just like, all right, this didn't work.
Like stop chasing it, like start a new like start a new start a new idea run with that and so you know i've i try not to get too caught up like
when i was um my first like official job was really like a company called aviary it ended
up getting acquired by adobe um but i left before to join Diwalla and doing the crypto stuff. But before that, when I was in college, I met these two guys.
Um, and they were, we were building like this media, like, uh, like a tech startup.
I was like, I was still in college.
I sort of didn't know what I was doing, but like, I was just hungry.
And I would like set up meetings.
We were trying to like monetize online video.
Sort of like you could buy stuff that you see in a show. And everyone had that idea. But we had
some cool tech. And we ended up raising like a million bucks in like 2008 2009 from some from
from some VCs ended up helping them raise the money. And then I ended up like just being their
business development guy in America. They were from overseas. And every time they come to America,
I'd set up meetings for them. And I basically basically started like they paid me like 50k it was my first job i was actually still in school
and like we were like meeting with like hulu hulu just launched at the time we were meeting with
hulu we were meeting with all these like different um online like uh video companies and we were uh
trying to close deals and the company ended up like like, like fading, like fizzling out, we ended up
like, we raised the money, but it's sort of we went through the money fairly quickly building
tech and trying to, you know, hire a team and we didn't end up closing enough deals and making
enough money. And so the two guys, I love them, but they're like, Hey, we have a new idea we're
going to go with. It's a cybersecurity company um we built some cool tech to like
catch terrorists and spy on people and um do you want to be like hey come like you didn't know
entertainment before this come do cyber security i was like i don't know guys like i sort of need
to go and work with people who know what they're doing you're like fresh off the boat like i love
you but i ended up going and joining joining aviary and it was great because i like accelerated
my career from that but that company ended up being a billion-dollar company.
It was one of the most successful cybersecurity companies of all time.
And I actually was catching up with one of the founders recently.
And he's like, because they told me, like, hey, we'll give you 1% of the company.
We'll give you, like, 60K a salary.
This is 2009, 2010.
So for someone like just graduating college, this was a lot, you know,
a decent salary, but yeah, he's like, yeah.
And then they do like 300 million in revenue.
So they do like dividends because it's not very like,
they don't get a good multiple, but anyway, he was like, you know,
you would have made like $40 million on that, like, on your, like joining the company. I was like, you don't need to tell me this. Like,
I don't, I don't need to know that. But like, so the reason I bring it up is like, I missed that,
obviously. And then I joined, you know, aviary was there for two years, learned a ton had some
like really amazing bosses, and actually teammates. So we have like a mafia that came out of aviary.
This guy, Andrew was the designer there. He ended up becoming the
founding designer at Tinder. There was this guy
Nam who ended up becoming, eventually
was the CEO of Giphy, but was
like the first employee at Giphy.
We had this girl Erin who was the first employee at BarkBox.

who ended up working at Fortnite
and Epic Games was an early employee.
We had this guy Mike who ended up starting a company called and epic games as an early employee um we had uh this guy mike
who ended up uh starting a company called anchor and sold to spotify um we just had like an amazing
like a group of like 50 my boss was this guy paul paul murphy ended up becoming like the ceo of um
dots the video game and then now he's a big vc in in london um and so he was like, he was actually the chief of staff of Microsoft Office
Division. So he like was at the board meetings with like Bill
Gates and stuff like he was like, it was an amazing group of
people. And like, I wouldn't change that, even though I would
like that money from joining that other company, like I
accelerated my career the most being with these people. But the
the like event but then i joined dowala
the first day that i joined dowala bitcoin was four dollars um like i did not buy enough or hold
enough bitcoin to like you know uh and at points i probably owned enough to to own my own island
at this point um and like i miss that that. But like, I look at the,
like with the cybersecurity company,
I look at this and it's like,
I'm sort of directionally correct
in the sense that I'm like,
I'm in the arena.
You know what I mean?
Like I'm not getting it completely right.
Yeah, I missed out on joining the right company
for the right payday or the,
you know, holding onto the right thing for the right thing. But I'm like, I'm in the arena. I missed out on joining the right company for the right payday or the, you know, holding on to the right thing for the right thing.
But I'm like, I'm in the arena. I'm directionally correct.
And as long as like, I don't get bogged down and like, like, you know, the meme, like never kill yourself.
It's like that, like, that's life. It's like, you're never like, as long as you don't like burn out and become like my, my friend from Ivy League school,
out and become like my my friend from ivy league school who like just couldn't couldn't like get
past the fact that he was supposed to be like the next mark zuckerberg and just like you know um
uh as long as you don't like get in your head and get out of the game like you still have a chance
of of making it and so i think that's like i don't know there's a lot of lessons from that but i think
like for for this type of stuff it's like even if you you have a bad trade or this or that like as long as you just stay in the game you know
dude anything's possible i agree with that bro what is it what is it alex that you did were you
like a good leader a good developer like what was your thing that like made you excel?
I was relentless.
I was,
I just,
I have a engine on me that just, uh,
doesn't stop.
It actually,
my five-year-old has a similar thing.
She's just like,
it's like,
if you're like Hamilton,
like the nonstop,
like I just,
I'm my, as long as I'm awake, I'm, my brain is working towards whatever
it is that I'm up to.
I have a hard, I can't sleep.
Like I, I, I get very little sleep and I know I need to get more sleep, but like, I'm just
sort of always on and always working.
And so I like make up for my lack of ability and other things by like
just the like outworking and, and, and, and like always working, not working. And it doesn't mean
like, listen, I have, I have a wife, I have kids. Um, uh, I'm not, I'm not gonna say I'm the best,
but like, I, I like to, you know, if I go out to dinner, like a date night with my wife, like I
try to like, I put my phone down. I don't, I don't do that, you know? And so out to dinner like on date night with my wife like I try to like I put my phone down I don't I don't do that you know and so there's a balance there but I it wasn't that
like I outworked people it was just I was like it the word isn't hustle because like that feels
cheap but it's like it's um but also okay it was, it was just like, always, always working, always thinking. I think I'm a better than average, like problem solver. My brain, my brain is always in problem solve mode. And I think that's, you know, for example, we had a company called Social Rank, a social media analytics company.
It was very popular for Instagram back in 20.
This is what I left when I left Diwalla in 2014.
I started with my co-founder, Michael.
In 2014, 2019, we ran it and we sold it.
But 2014, we're doing social media analytics.
So like basically digging into your followers on Twitter and Instagram.
And it became like one of the more popular ones.
We're doing like a hundred,
200 K a month in MRR,
get a small team of like five people.
It was,
you know,
we raised a little bit of venture money,
but like,
it was really nice.
and then all the API started,
being taken away,
you know,
first Instagram,
then Twitter.
And like this problem solving of like,
how do we still get the data we need to actually do the thing we need to do? And so I'd say like, I'm, I'm, I'm an above average, like problem solver.
Um, and so I say it's a combination of like working hard, you know, um, not like hoping
that like something's just going to be given to me, but like, you know, I'm, I'm just gonna,
um, uh, like, uh, work hard towards something and then just like brain always working to problem solve.
I'd say those are probably the things that have helped.
It doesn't hurt that I'm I'm a fairly like person I ran like, I realized fairly early on that the way you, um, break into any
industry, the way you like, um, become someone in any industry is you, you essentially need to,
um, do two things. You need to like read everything you can and about that industry.

and then you need to like,
attend all the events in that industry.
And I,
and then I realized if you actually write yourself,
like if you,
like I,
sorry,
I had,
if you actually go back into the,
into the archive,
I had a blog for many years called,

I think it still exists.
and so there's like seven years of like just stuff I was learning on the job. And I would just like write like a short little blog post. And like sometimes there's a paragraph, sometimes two paragraphs. And so I wrote a lot. But then I also started a bunch of like New York tech events. So I ran like the business development group in New York. I ran a New York education because we were doing like an education thing at aviary for a little bit. Um, I ran like a VC meetup, like I ran a bunch of
things. And when you run events in person in a, in a like geographic, um, and you're organizing
it and you're getting speakers for the event and you're getting, you're getting panelists or you're
getting a moderators or you're moderating yourself. um you just become like the center of attention
and you get to meet everyone so i for from basically 20 2010 to 20 you know 18 i moved to
miami in 2020 but like really from 2010 to 20 like for for like a good seven to eight years, or let's say, five to nine years, I was
either running events, like, it would be like once a month, we do like a once a month business
development meetup. But then I get like, the head of business development for like,
Foursquare at the time, which was the hottest startup in New York. And I had like, we'd get
like Tristan Walker, who was the head of biz dev to come and give a talk and like 500 biz dev people
and New York startups and VCs and founders would come and like, I would be emailing them
the events and I'd be people reach out to me and want to meet.
And so like, I got to meet everyone.
And so, um, it was a little bit like of like strategy and tactics on that on, on like,
I want to be, I had a goal early on in my career which
is like i want to be one degree away from any single person at any company so that if i ever
needed help i can like email one person who can get me in front of the person i need to get to
and that was like a very deliberate thing and then i realized the way to do that was to like run events write a bunch and just like be in the center of of that type of stuff and so it's like i have an
app in the app store and i have an issue i need to talk to somebody from apple and the app store
like i needed someone who knew someone there or i needed to know that person myself and at a certain
point and i'm there now because i'm like a little bit more later in my career but like a few years in like i could basically get to anyone anywhere um
and maybe not like the most senior person but i can get to someone who can help me
uh and and i end up helping a lot of startups at the same time so that was a little another piece
of it is i just would uh help people start not ask for anything so for example there
was a company there was these two girls um uh Danielle and Carly they uh for a little while
I taught on I don't know if people remember this thing called Skillshare but it was uh back in the
day in New York Tech it was like a cool startup called Skillshare and uh you could like teach any
skill like you don't need to be a teacher.
It's like you just LARP as a teacher.
So I taught like an intro to business development class.
And I would charge like, actually did pretty well.
I made like a decent amount of money.
But I would teach like an intro to like, I don't know, partnerships, biz dev, all that type of stuff.
Like how to approach them, what to think about, how to go to meetings, how to prepare yourself.
And so I made these like presentations.
And then I would do them either in person or online. And so I do like once a month, I do it
in person once a month, I would do it online. And, um, uh, these two girls that worked at NBC
came to one of the events and they're like, Hey, we've got this cool idea. We want to quit our
jobs and start this company. Um, and so I really liked the pitch and I ended up like helping them.
Like, uh, I introduced them to a developer who would the pitch. And I ended up like helping them like, I introduced
them to a developer who would build the site, I ended up introducing them some of their investors,
and they launched it. And it was called the skim and ended up becoming like a really, really popular
website. And I ended up actually, if you have was like the first subscriber of the skim, they ended
up, they just recently sold actually, um they did very well and um it ended
becoming like one of the most in like important gen z female like email digests out there and they
raised like 20 million plus dollars from vcs and had millions and millions of subscribers and
actually had a really really big business also um and just like by doing that like helping them get started whatever
i remember like a few years later i was about to launch a new product i think either at social
rank or at upstream and the journalist who's going to cover it ended up like it's like a weird thing
i think they end up getting fired like the day before they're supposed to cover our lunch and so
i they they ended up like getting me on like fox business and and like uh a bunch of
like cnn and a bunch of other these mac like things because they were in like media and they
knew everyone and so i just i find that like you know if you're if you like approach life as being
like long-term greedy and you just like want to be helpful just for the sake of being helpful
like it always comes back around and so there's like like a, I believe there's like a karma in the sky, where like, if you do enough good, like,
you know, it's sort of, it's actually someone once described as like a bank account,
right? You know, like debits and credits. And like, if you are always like asking for shit from
people, then like, you're just like overcharging or overdrafting, right? And so like, as long as
you have, like, you're given enough away, like you can, you can always be like, I I'm a big believer that you should always be
giving and taking all the time, you know, asking and giving. Um, and if you do that and you do it
from a genuine place, not a, not a greedy place, um, you really can, uh, um, you, you, you really
will have like, uh, uh, an advantage in your life in your career
so when i look at like what you've done in in a timely manner right like goblin town for example
you guys did that within a matter of few days dropped it and took over the space and then you
have this goblin town game i mean i've been promised from 90 million nft projects that they
were gonna launch a game and you know had me test out a bunch of bullshit and the game never came
and i see you guys not talk much about it no one's really expecting anything to drop besides a few
people in the community and then you drop like this fully functional game and it works amazing
and everyone's loving it you've got gamers talking about it and streaming it how do you guys do
things so quick like that and it looks it looks almost effortless you know until you see the

the twitter spaces they remember tenny yeah I think they all remember it but they don't remember
that it was like there for like 20 minutes max and there was like maybe 50 transactions but like
they you know what I mean but they they um they uh they remember like certain moments they remember
like you know the the crazy pump and like how the whole market was dead.
They remember they remember like the burger experience or some people remember the you know, they remember the they remember like NFT NYC in the burger truck.
They remember maybe the Steve Aoki thing.
Then they may remember like the Macy's thing a year later, only up like the new burger truck with the with the with the with the video game stuff.
Like there's just like moments they remember.
And obviously the people that are like the most in the community there, they remember the they remember the certain community member who flamed out.

But most people aren't seeing that.
And actually, most people have a really just like positive experience

town that most people have a really positive experience because they remember like the joy
and the fun um you know uh i think the reason why we're we're maybe better at that in the sense of
like we don't say anything we just do is because like the whole team really comes from like, the startup space a lot more in the sense of like, like building like software and things like that. And I think in the startup space, we sort of look at roadmaps. And it's funny, because we said like, no roadmap, no this. But like, when you're at a startup, you know, just because you said you were going to do X or Y, you know, and you realize that that's not the right thing two months later, and that you should be doing A, B, or C instead, you know, you just do that, right?
You just do it and you move on.
In crypto, if, you know, and I usually give this example, like, you know, Moonbirds and Kevin Rose, right?
However you feel about them, I'm sure a lot of people don't like them.
When they gave their roadmap of doing that, that like conference thing that they end up canceling, right?
When they announced it, it was probably a good idea.
And then the market changed and it was not a good idea anymore.
And so they made the right decision probably to cancel it.

I wasn't in any of those meetings,
but they probably made the right decision to cancel that event.
But the second you come out and you say something
and you don't do it in the space,
you sort of can't walk it back,

to do you just sort of can't walk it back and when you're building a company you're building
something that you want to last like you need to be able to be flexible and so i think like
every time we have the urge to like you know announce something that's like an announcement
of an announcement you know we always just like no we can't do that like you know it something that's like an announcement of an announcement you know we
always just like no we can't do that like you know it's the thing might change five times before we
actually do it and then like if we actually say this or do this we can't anymore like we'll just
be you know eaten alive and um yeah so it's it's it's like uh it's more of like like we're like battle you know we're like
sort of a little bit more battle tested or like you know we've we've been we've been we've been
in this space for a while and we see how the realities of some of this stuff and so i think we
we sort of like take that in in stride of like okay um let's just, let's just show, let's not tell, let's just show.
And I also think it's, I like talking about the stuff we're doing. I'd say I can't really take
the, I can't take the credit for that mentality. I'd say that's really more on uh to the co-founders um caesar and uh and and process gray
um they're they're more of the like shut the fuck up alex like don't don't talk about this
thing control yourself for a few days um and i'm i think i'm a little bit more of like uh
like a lucy lips um than uh than than they are. But they set the tone of that, I think, for the whole team.
