named peanut and she was this cute little black rat and we got her to the point that she would

like it took me, like I used to overproduce my voice so much
because I wasn't used to hearing it on a recording.
Like it took me so long to just like have my like rap voice come out raw
and like not
want to like heavily fucking you know put delay on it or like heavy reverb and like wash it out
you know what I mean like I found yeah there was definitely a period where I was overproducing my
stuff because I didn't like the sound of my voice but and I think we like struggle with that especially
if you're mixing your own voice I find. I find it's easy to overproduce
your stuff. Absolutely. It's part of the reason why I kind of gave up on self-producing. Well,
I produce the songs, but when it comes to vocals, I kind of go in, I sing my parts,
I lay it down, and then I just let the engineer do the mixing and production stuff on my voice.
And if there's anything that stands out that I'm like, hey, can you fix this?
I don't really like this kind of like reverb, whatever.
I'll say it.
But yeah, I don't know.
It's so, so easy to get super nitpicky about your own voice and just like keep layering stuff on it when it it really doesn't need it
because it's yours like that's what makes it cool that's what makes it unique um you know if you have
to take another take because you didn't get it out the way you wanted to that's one thing but um
i don't know i just have like such a huge appreciation for raw vocals these days i hear
my stuff and i'm like that's my voice and other people hear my
stuff they're like that's your voice you know what i mean like so it's like and that's it's
very you know subjective for yourself right so like i don't know yeah uh but yeah pain waves

know i remember even the the first one i did for for rocky rocky
was like super picky he's like bro he's like the way i record he's like this and that i'm like okay
man like whenever you're ready like just you know send me some stems whenever you're like i wasn't
like you know it took him like i don't know it was maybe like a year of us talking and chatting
and then and then he sent me that bounce track to do and he recorded it from home and it was like
in an open room and you could hear his voice bouncing off the fucking walls and it was like super saturated with just
room noise right and i did a decent job on it like the mix was okay for what i for what i had
but he was like you know he's really surprised at the end of it he was like telling me how picky he
was and this and that i'm like you know okay yeah like you know like i said whenever you're ready
but you know um less is more with mixing And that's the point that I got to.
It's like I found so many, it's so easy to overproduce shit.
Where mixing is really the art of subtraction.
It's what can you do with the EQ to cut out shit that doesn't need to be there.
That's fighting with shit that does need to be there.
So it was learning that art of reduction, really, in noise.
Oh, absolutely, dude like what was important well my my stepdad he's an audiophile right so he's he's got one of the
most insane sound systems i've ever listened to like i'm talking like 800 pound speaker cabinets
like it's ridiculous right but like he's got albums where you can hear like and i don't know
why but he's got albums that you can hear like and i don't know why but he's got albums that you
can hear like the guy breathing the guy like rubbing his finger on the string you know before
he plays a song and like to me that brings it so much more to life the actual music itself and the
artistry itself whereas yeah you've got these radio edits where it's like you can't hear them
breathing because they've cut out the like you know you know they've cut that oh that's my biggest pet peeve that's where they cut the life
out of it on the radio that's where this ai stuff is losing me too right and actually a perfect
example of how i mix my music and somebody has actually mentioned this to me before cara the
song that you just asked me to send you uh with the bringing you down hook on it if you notice i did not cut
any of my breath work out of that it's like i there's it's maybe automated down in volume a
little bit but i want the humanized factor but that's the one thing that people have pointed
out my mix they're like why don't you cut your breath oh blah blah blah blah because that's
what that you really know it's a human doing that recording yeah you try and sing and breathe like
that at the same time and keep the tempo last tempo that's a good example because i really like the mix on that hook because it's a studio
sounding mix in that hook but i definitely left my breathing in there for that reason which that's
awesome dude one of the things about leaving the breathing in is it actually um doesn't discourage
upcoming people if they
can't hear, you know, because it makes it
sound too perfect. But a lot of studio music
is like that. Yeah. Well, it also helps
vocalists that are training
know when to breathe.
So, like, if you're doing some crazy
vocal runs and stuff, it's, like,
important to
know, like, oh, wow, she didn't
take a breath till there. that's my okay that's what
and sierra like sometimes i've heard i've heard artists like inhale but they're inhaling on the
key of the next note they're supposed to play you know they're like you know what i mean like it's
and then they and then they execute the note with the same tone. Like, it's, that's, I don't know.
To me, that's the life of the music right there,
is you can hear, like Jules was saying,
I purposely didn't edit that out because I want you to hear it.
That's the human in there.
It's like, you can tell that I didn't top it.

had mentioned it's like weird for up-and- or like, um, like people training to sing, uh, and, and
rap. I have some students, um, like vocal students that I have to like sit down and like, we print
out the lyrics and I'm like, okay, so I think they're taking a breath here and here and here.
And my students are like, they're like 10 years old and they're like, but I can't hear them
breathing. And I'm like, it's okay that's production like i
have to explain to them like no that's that's because they've taken their breaths out of the
song and they're like what what do you mean you just have to show them you literally just have
to show them record it and take it out and then they'll be like oh i understand yeah for for hip
hop i feel like you should be like a dj should be able to just throw on the loop, you know what I mean?
And there should be no recorded track behind you.
You see everybody perform.
This is the other thing that gets me with hip-hop too, is that it should be like a performance.
Like a guitarist, a singer-songwriter would play just with their guitar and et cetera sitting down at the show or whatever, right?
But these people who are just singing over
their recorded tracks like you see it so much like that for hip-hop that drives me absolutely
nuts a dj should be able to throw on a loop with no chorus on it no nothing and you should be able
to perform your track engage with the audience and do your hip-hop thing your chorus and all that
shit just over the loop right like so like, otherwise it's like a brought you away from karaoke.
I feel like studio music
kind of killed what hip-hop really
was, and it was really just raw
expression. A DJ would get on, spin a loop,
and then an MC would
fucking perform and
put on and engage with the crowd.
