Mainstream adoption: the holy grail. But what, for people who haven't used crypto and seen what web3, blockchain, and the rest of the community has to offer, in their eyes is stopping it? Risk. Every time an end user accepts a signature request they have also incurred risk and liability where none is required as well as entered into another (open-ended) contract and then handed that over to an unknown party who stores it under unknown conditions and hasn't received anything near that in return. If anyone you don't personally know requests that you put your signature on a blank sheet of paper anywhere outside of web3, would you? With the rise of "digital identities" and the elation of being a "web3 citizen" this becomes a perilous thing and in the eyes of regulators it is only fitting that they step in. After all, it looks to them like not only is crypto full of scams but that developers are being reckless and end users are simply naïve for not recognizing the potential consequences of their online and social activities. A judge can only administer legal proceedings if they read the word "signature" without context and as stated, then apply the legal definition impartially. And one bad actor writing malicious code could also have a "get-out-of-jail free" card with something everyone has come to see as benign, leaving anyone who accepts a signature request and interacts with that malicious contract on the hook as accomplices in what could even be a RICO case if a crime happened to be carried out while the perpetrator makes a clean getaway. This is the alternative and it goes by many names: an autograph, seal, mark, insignia. The word "citizen" implies that which one is a citizen of has the duty of protection in equal reciprocation for a citizen's duty of allegiance. Developers, users, investors, are all equally pushing the space forward. With the current conditions, however, we need the proper digital replacement for the "signature request" - we need something that matches the actual intention to replace the misuse of words. secureSEAL is the replacement and offers separate projects and use cases already in the works to be built on top of it. It's time to make protection automatic. If all you leave behind is legacy: protect it. |
